    The Letter

A memorial statue to Vietnam veterans, created by a local man who served during the Vietnam era, was unveiled in a ceremony at the Samuel J. Churchill United States Army Reserve Center, 2100 Iowa Street, Lawrence, Kansas on November 11th 1988. On Memorial Day, 1989 “The Letter” was permanently located on the grounds in front of the reserve center.

“The Letter” is a bronze and stone sculpture created by John Smither, a U.S. Navy veteran from Lawrence, Kansas. His artwork depicts the battlefield memorial scenes that took place for fallen U.S. forces in Vietnam. “The Letter” includes a plaque listing the names of Lawrence-area veterans who served and died in Vietnam.

The Letter was paid for through local fund-raising efforts. “The Letter” was damaged by vandals a few months after it’s dedication. Mr. Smither’s, the sculptor repaired “The Letter” and a lighting system was installed.

The plaque on the statue reads:

    THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD,
AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD.
    AGE SHALL NOT WITHER THEM,
    NOR SHALL THE YEARS CONDEMN.
AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN
    AND IN THE MORNING
    WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.”

    ~ LAURENCE BINYON
